Cut nails are sheared from plate
(mild steel, aluminium, phosphor bronze or wrought iron) giving a
square/tapered shank giving a wedge effect.
The sharp edges
on a cut nail provide a far superior grip (in wood and autoclaved aerated
concrete block) compared with a round wire nail.
The tapered shank means the general
shape of some designs of cut nails are similar to handmade nails.
